About Derek Dickinson

Over the past few years I have been working predominantly in monochrome. In effect removing all colour, working in white, with occasional tones of grey and now pure black, using unique reliefs of muslin to create form, revealing eclectic, emotional expression through contorts of paint soaked fabric. Expressionistic yet controlled, muslin is thrown repeatedly and teased until the ethos of the piece is revealed.
Derek is currently working in Berlin theatre, designing set, costume and film projections for a new production of Ariel Dorfman’s, Purgatorio.Derek Dickinson originates from South West England. After leaving school he studied to become a hairstylist, leading to a successful career, including a teaching position at Plymouth College. In 1983 he relocated to London and worked as a designer and stylist for film, photography, television, video and performance, as an assistant director on music videos and was also engaged in artist management and PR.

Derek’s work was wide-ranging, predominantly associated with the music industry, working with various international artists such as Kiki Dee, Annie Lennox, Shakespeare’s Sister, Morrissey, Elton John, and Rod Stewart. He has worked throughout Europe and toured the USA, Australia, Japan, and South America.  In 2010, he completed a  Fine Arts degree at Plymouth University, since which he has exhibited work in numerous solo and group shows in London and south west England.

Derek is represented by Artbridge, Artmill, The Modern Artist Gallery, Saatchionline and Artfinder. He currently resides on a remote farm on the Duchy of Cornwall Estate and has an atelier in Plymouth’s historic Laira Battery.

He is also working on a solo exhibition to be held at, Retramp Gallery, Berlin in September.
